Help Us, Help Children & Young People

We are often approached by parents and carers of children and young people who are desperately in need of help. They may be experiencing bullying, have started to self-harm, or have developed an eating disorder. Others may have learning difficulties which result in them struggling in a school setting. Many have tried conventional talking therapies but not been able to engage. Often the people who need our support are those who can afford it the least.

Our mission:

We don’t ever want to turn someone aged under 18 away from our service because they can’t afford it. We want to ensure we have a hardship fund to enable at least 10 children and young people in 2022/23 can have a series of one-to-one encounters with our herd and therapy team.

Our target: £8,000

Help Us, Help The NHS

Right now NHS workers and other frontline staff are in the middle of a crisis that will have a long term impact on all of us – but them in particular.

The Covid 19 pandemic means such individuals are routinely exposed to things the general population would never encounter - loss of patients, illness of colleagues, high levels of stress and increased exposure to Covid-19 itself.

It is highly likely that many will suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other associated mental health problems.

MPs and the British Psychological Society say professional help from psychologists and therapists needs to be easily accessible - so trauma can be dealt with early.

Our mission:

We want to offer 20 NHS workers/front line staff from Gloucestershire the opportunity to attend a free programme of 8 weekly sessions with our herd and therapy team to help them process their experiences. Staff will be given the option for one-to-one sessions or to participate in a group.

Help Us, Help Veterans

Equine Assisted Therapy has become particularly well known for its treatment of veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Symptoms can include:

  • being constantly anxious

  • being unable to relax

  • vividly re-experiencing a traumatic event

  • avoiding anything that might trigger distressing memories or feelings

  • becoming socially isolated

PTSD can lead to problems in relationships and at work, including irritability, anger and substance misuse, particularly alcohol.

The culture of the armed forces can make seeking help for a mental health problem appear difficult. A military professional may delay seeking help for a number of reasons, such as thinking that they can cope, fear of criticism, or feeling that a conventional therapist won't understand.

We can offer a programme of support to help veterans with PTSD address their symptoms in a setting that is familiar and ‘in-line’ with their working culture

Being outdoors, rather than office based is usual for such clients, as is the experiential model of learning we employ.

By completing a series of activities with our herd participants can acquire tools to help minimize and neutralise the symptoms of trauma.

Our approach can help other people with PTSD too.

Our mission:

We plan to offer at least 1 PTSD group for 6 veterans in 2022/23 and support another 4 individuals with PTSD in one to one sessions who could not otherwise afford it.

Our target: £6,000

Fundraise for us

Fancy doing a sponsored run, a bake sale or even something more adventurous? Whatever your age, doing a fundraiser is a great way to raise money for us and to spread the word about our work.  Let us know your plans and we can use our social media platforms to encourage you – and celebrate your achievement!

Here’s some ideas to get you started, but remember – the quirkier and more unique your event the better in order to stand out and excite your supporters.

  1. Auction
Schools might like to think about an art auction! Come and draw our horses and then, along with other items, feature them at an auction event

  2. Fundraising Raffle
If your organisation is having a Christmas raffle  – make us one of the beneficiaries! We might be able to help with a prize or two

  3. Ugly Jumper day
We all have that one horrible jumper a well-intentioned family member knitted or bought for us. It’s time to put it to good use. Why not ask all staff members to wear an ugly jumper to work and donate to the cause?

  4. Garage Sale
One person's junk is almost always another person's treasure, which is why garage sales are    such fun and successful events.

  5. Tea Party
We’re all very partial to a cup of tea, piece of cake and cosy chat at Red Horse. Why not host a tea party on our behalf? You could add in some quizzes or a challenge or too to spice it up and encourage your guests to give a little more.
